Fashion can mean many things. But for Louis, it's another creative medium for him to express his ideas and storyboard the moments in his life. Today we want to meet Louis, the man behind Phase Space, to learn more about what enticed him to start Phase Space and how the connections he has made led him to foster the community that he has built up with Phase to Phase.

In a time where fashion is actively commodified, it's rare to find moments where fashion is used as a tool for creative expression and not another symbol of consumerism. But lately with the growing appreciation for creative media and craftmanship — especially as a response to challenge the rise of generative media — the fashion space is not just growing in volume but also in meaningful ways.

Fashion is more than just cotton, it is becoming a medium.

We want to open this article with this because amidst the local fashion space, there have been many interpretations of what the garment should represent to the creator, and we have always been fascinated with how these relationships are formed.

Entering Phase Space — A space opened up by Louis Lim ,a true community guy and a creative genius who a couple of months ago who wants to use this space as a canvas of expression for his friends and smaller creators he supports. Forget everything you think you know about graphic tees and mass-produced trends.

real connections, phase 2 phase.

From the moment you enter Phase Space — or even before the moment you enter — it is very apparent what kind of vibe you are supposed to approach the store as many trinkets and decorations (even the mailbox at the storefront!) gives lots of attention to detail of the space that Louis wants to cultivate.

Even when briefly looking around, we were captivated by the charm and aesthetic of the shop — ranging from Avant Garde-like items being placed around to intricate pieces made by Louis and his friends like this pillar which was crafted over a few days just to make they were balanced properly!

When looking around and finding items like these, it genuinely felt like every item here has a unique story to tell and it's not just a item to fill an empty space. And with an owner like Louis who loves to tell stories (and is also very good at it!), it was genuinely fun and exciting hearing what every item means to him.

Carrying the same eccentric yet storyful charm into clothes

One of the reasons we wanted to visit Louis's shop is to understand what were the thought processes or stories behind every of the clothes he made, especially the creative decisions and ideas he had when designing his unique graphics. And we were not disappointed as we found it very fascinating how every item here resembles the same type of energy the space presented us with. Louis loves telling a story, and his clothes reflects that, as many of the pieces were crafted with the intent of sharing a memory that was really important or to commemorate moments Phase Space—the shop/brand— found meaningful.

I wanted to let these stories out

One of our favorites was this tee — The Grab Kenneth Tee, which Louis explains that the story on the back was a true story during a Grab ride with his friend! The story went over how he was inspired by the tale of a Grab driver urging them to not reminisce over the things they missed out in the past and figure out their own thing in the present moment — which inspired them heavily to pursue their passions! He also told us how he found that even in small moments like a simple Grab ride that stories like these can just write itself so easily that it was cool to share them.

One thing we really enjoyed was how Louis told these stories for us to relate to. A lot of these stories were his own personal experiences like this story about the people close to him — like this POSITIVI TEE, which was cleverly named over a story about some one close to him trying to learn to speak English and finding themselves wanting to learn words like 'I care' or 'I like' to spread the positive energy to people around them. These stories felt captivating because even though we weren't there, we felt as inspired as he was in that moment.

While we can't possibly go over every item Louis made in his space, we urge you to visit the store, have a look and even ask him about the clothes he has made and what gave him the inspirations he keeps finding.

Giving a space for others to shine

One of the core values Louis wants to foster in Phase Space is that it is a space that anyone can come in and feel their own presence. It's this sense of community that he wants to bring in that he wanted to use this space to showcase the cool projects and hobbies his friends are up to.

I wanted to give anyone starting something small a platform

In the same vicinity as his own stuff, you can see that he also featured collections and creative projects from his own friends. One of them was this 3D printed accessories line from DSKFRM with an exclusive PHASE SPACE version. Louis mentioned, he felt it was as important to him that this place was to give people who want to try something new a platform to shine and explore. He didn't want to use the space to promote a big brand that wouldn't amount to anything to his community. Rather, he wants to give people a platform that he would have wanted when building his creative projects.

The inspirations behind it all

Finally, the part that we felt was most exciting, Louis's collection of magazines and inspirations. As we were trying to figure out our own brand, we were struggling with coming up with an identity for our magazine and even a style we wanted to lean into. As we pondered that, Louis was the one who gave us the suggest to hop by his store and maybe find out here, and he was not wrong.

Looking through Louis's collection of personal zines and magazines he collected over the years, we can see how Phase to Phase became such a unique concept. With collections from designers that inspired him to projects he worked with his friends on, we felt that looking through the zines and look books he had gave us a lot of inspiration to create something that could give the emotions these zines gave us.

But most importantly, we wanted to see how all of it shaped to his own personal zines. One of my the zines titled We're Open was one the most eye opening zine we have ever viewed. It was a collection of multiple photos taken during a pop up he had where it looked chaotic and hectic but most importantly it looked like a lot of fun was had in those few nights. Just merely browsing through gave us such positive energy that it was super inspiring to us that we wanted to create a project like this ourselves. But most importantly, our favourite part was the quote at the back of the zine.

I made nothing tonight
But I got everything tonight
Thank you
